From August 2025, registration for doctoral studies will take place via the University of Passau's new doctoral student management system. Further information can be found on this website.
The University of Passau is currently implementing a doctoral management system that will digitally record and manage the entire doctoral process in the future. The aim is to make the process more efficient and transparent for doctoral candidates. The full functionality of the system is expected to be available by the end of 2026. The first function already introduced is the digital application for the acceptance as a doctoral candidate.
The supervision agreement must be finalised before applying for the acceptance as a doctoral candidate. Following this, it is important that a copy is enclosed with the application for the acceptance as a doctoral candidate (see § 7 and 8 General Doctoral Regulations).
Exception: At the Faculty of Law, the finalisation of a supervision agreement is not required. At the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics, a corresponding justification must be submitted in the absence of such an agreement.
In order to apply for the acceptance as a doctoral candidate, you must first register on the University of Passau's campus portal:
During registration, data is collected which, according to the Higher Education Statistics Act (HStatG) of 2 March 2016, must be reported annually on current doctoral projects at the university (§5 HStatG). You can also manage your contact details and view the status of your applications in the campus portal.
Exception: If you are already enrolled or employed at the university, registration is no longer necessary. In this case, please log in to Campusportal with your ZIM ID.
The faculty in which you wish to obtain your doctoral degree is responsible for accepting you as a doctoral candidate and checking your certificates. Please have the following documents ready, which must be uploaded in the application:
We have summarised the individual steps for you in detail in a document. You will soon be able to download the document here.
Once the application has been submitted, it will be reviewed by the relevant faculty. You will receive notification of the acceptance or rejection by post. You can view the processing status of your application at any given time in the campus portal.
You can only enrol for doctoral studies once you have completed your registration in the campus portal and received a certificate confirming your application for the acceptance as a doctoral candidate. Enrolment is not mandatory, but it does have some advantages.
