Doctoral candidates and early-stage researchers face a wide variety of professions and career paths open to them. Launching a career and attaining long-term success in these professional fields often demands a wide range of competencies. The Graduate Centre offers training programmes that specifically cater to the needs of early career researchers.
While our information events address cross-disciplinary aspects relevant to early-stage researchers' qualification, our workshops (organized by the Centre for Careers and Competencies) aim at supporting and expanding the skills involved in conducting research.
The foundation of any scientific work at the University of Passau is compliance with the recognised principles of science such as being honest, working lege artis as well as documenting and constantly questioning all results. Scientific misconduct harms the person concerned, the university and science in general. In order to increase awareness of the basic rules and to strengthen the researchers' trust in one another, the Graduate Centre offers an e-learning course free of charge entitled "Good academic practice".

The faculties pool our researchers' expertise. Although the university does not offer a comprehensive doctoral curriculum, the faculties offer a variety of lectures and seminars that help doctoral researchers deepen their disciplinary knowledge. Each semester, these events are carefully selected to meet doctoral researchers' needs.
Prof. Dr. Brigitte Forster-Heinlein
After her graduation, she joined the graduate program Applied Algorithmic Mathematics at TUM. In 2001 she obtained her Dr. rer. nat. with "summa cum laude". The topic of her dissertation was nonharmonic Fourier series for signal analysis. Both her diploma and her doctoral thesis were awarded by the Hurwitz-Gesellschaft in 1999 and 2001 respectively.
Then Brigitte Forster was postdoctoral researcher at the graduate program and guest researcher at the Institute for Biomathematics and Biometry IBB at the GSF Research Center for Environment and Health, Neuherberg. She there worked on sampling theorems with nodes in the complex plane and complex integral transforms for signal analysis.
In 2002 she received a grant from the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina and joined the Biomedical Imaging Group at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne EPFL, Switzerland. She there worked on the construction of complex wavelets for signal and image analysis. From October 2003 to October 2004 she was Marie-Curie-Fellow in the Research Training Network Harmonic Analysis and Statistics for Signal and Image Processing HASSIP funded by the European Commission. In September 2004 she received the Max Anliker Memorial Poster Award at the Annual Meeting of the Swiss Society of Biomedical Engineering.
In 2006 Brigitte Forster was appointed Juniorprofessor for Mathematical Modelling in Biomedical Engineering at the Technische Universität München.
In addition, from 2005 to 2009, Brigitte Forster was Team Leader of her Marie-Curie-Excellence-Team "MAMEBIA - Mathematical Methods in Biological Image Analysis" at the Helmholtz Zentrum München. The project was funded by the European Commission.
Since April 2012, Brigitte Forster is Professor for Applied Mathematics at the University of Passau.
She is curator of the Passauer Mathematik Museum. From October 2013 to September 2015 she served as vice dean for the department. She is deputy head of the Forwiss Institute and deputy speaker of the Passau Graduate Centre.
In her research, she is concerned with complex analysis and approximation theory as well as their application in image analysis.
In 2021 she received the Ars Legendi-Fakultätenpreis Mathematik of the Stifterverband,. Moreover she was "Mathemacherin der Monate Mai und Juni" of the Deutsche Mathematiker Vereinigung DMV.
Brigitte Forster is married and has two children.
