Training courses
Doctoral candidates and early-stage researchers face a wide variety of professions and career paths open to them. Launching a career and attaining long-term success in these professional fields often demands a wide range of competencies. The Graduate Centre offers training programmes that specifically cater to the needs of early career researchers.
Events offered by or via the Graduate Centre
While our information events address cross-disciplinary aspects relevant to early-stage researchers' qualification, our workshops (organized by the Centre for Careers and Competencies) aim at supporting and expanding the skills involved in conducting research.
Workshops
The foundation of any scientific work at the University of Passau is compliance with the recognised principles of science such as being honest, working lege artis as well as documenting and constantly questioning all results. Scientific misconduct harms the person concerned, the university and science in general. In order to increase awareness of the basic rules and to strengthen the researchers' trust in one another, the Graduate Centre offers an e-learning course free of charge entitled "Good academic practice".
Please contact us if you would like to participate in the e-learning course. You will receive log-in data and further information that will allow you to take part in the e-learning course anytime from your computer.
For further information events, workshops and other events offered by the Graduate Centre in German please refer to the German version of this website.

Content:Presentations offer a good opportunity to communicate your ideas and your research in academic (as well as non-academic) contexts. Yet, making a presentation effective requires a series of skills that are often difficult to put into practice when facing an unfamiliar audience, when speaking in English, or when feeling nervous and under pressure.
The purpose of this workshop is, therefore, to support you in developing your academic presentation skills in English while, at the same time, making you more confident about applying them in practice – e.g., at conferences or in other academic environments. For that, we will, on the one hand, discuss a series of important techniques to plan and deliver effective and forceful presentations (particularly in English) and will, on the other hand, consider how to avoid typical errors, how to handle difficult situations while presenting, and how to answer questions properly.
In order to make this workshop as useful for you as possible and to address your personal presentation style, you will be given the opportunity to give a short presentation (maximum 10 minutes) after the course (at a date to be arranged) and to receive peer and expert feedback on it. This presentation is voluntary, and the feedback will focus on how to reach a maximum communicative effect – e.g. through the adequate use of English, stylistic and rhetorical devices, your personal presence, structural organization, the use of voice, and the supportive integration of visual aids (such as PowerPoint). In the end, we will thus have developed a comprehensive checklist of criteria for presenting well in English.
The workshop is open to anyone interested in developing their presentation skills. Please note, though, that it will be taught in English. Thus, to participate and get the best out of it, you should be able to communicate reasonably well in English.
Learning Objectives:
- presenting fluently and professionally in English at conferences or similar academic events
- communicating ideas effectively through different strategies and various channels
- understanding the specific formal and stylistic requirements of presentations in English
- avoiding typical errors and misunderstandings when publicly presenting in academic contexts
- dealing with difficult situations, questions, and nervousness or stress during a presentation
