The University of Passau offers the following doctoral programmes (some of which are structured):
International cooperation programmes (cotutelle de thèse)
The Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics of the Universität Passau, the INSA Lyon (France) and Università degli Studi of Milano (Italy) founded the international research and innovation Center in Intelligent Digital Systems "IRIXIYS". Amongst other things, IRIXYS supports and promotes through the international doctoral college MDPS joint doctorates.
Multimedia, Distributed and Pervasive Secure Systems
IRIXYS doctoral students can carry out half of their research within a partner institution; such doctorates are taking place under the co-supervision of two professors (one in each institution). At the end, students undertake a final presentation in front of an international jury and obtain a doctor title from both institutions.

Research Training Groups funded by the DFG
Research Training Groups are established by universities to promote early career researchers. Funded by the DFG for a period of up to nine years, their key emphasis is on the qualification of doctoral researchers within the framework of a focused research programme and a structured training strategy. RTGs with an interdisciplinary approach are highly welcome. The aim is to prepare doctoral researchers for the complexities of the job market in science and academia and simultaneously to encourage early academic independence.
DFG Research Training Group 1681/2 'Privacy and Digitalisation'
The interdisciplinary and interfaculty DFG Research Training Group 1681/2 "Privacy and digitalization" is based at the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Law at the University of Passau. There is the possibility of doing a doctorate in various fields of the humanities, cultural studies and law.
In the extension period the Research Training Group (RTG) addresses privacy specific aspects of digitalization and touches upon an area of high actuality and political relevance, social topicality and an outstanding scientific significance. The aim of the RTG is to adjust the status of privacy conditions of digitalization and increasing informational self-determination and to put to test the existing concepts of privacy. This happens within the research areas of „digitalization“, „surveillance and control“ as well as „self-determination and responsibility“. The complexity of the unsolved issues at the intersection of technic, law, ethics, culture and social behavior requires an interdisciplinary research which has its ideal ground at the University of Passau.

Cooperative doctoral programmes
With its currently eleven Joint Academic Partnerships, the Bavarian Academic Forum’s Expert Forum for Consortial Doctorates sets new standards for cooperative doctoral degrees. The consortial doctorate is structured, predictable and transparent. Our BayWISS Joint Academic Partnerships are subject-specific platforms and networks for both young and experienced researchers alike, and strengthen the culture of academic exchange between Bavarian universities and universities of applied sciences.
The University of Passau acts as lead university of the BayWISS Joint Academic Partnership “Media and Communications” and is participating in three other Joint Academic Partnerships.

Cross-university doctoral programmes
The University of Passau is involved in two Bavarian doctoral programmes in the fields of economics and political theory. Within these doctoral programmes, doctoral students can participate in research workshops and conferences, among other things, and take advantage of networking opportunities beyond the home university.
Bavarian Graduate Program in Economics
The Bavarian Graduate Program in Economics (BGPE) is a doctoral program available to doctoral students of economics at participating Bavarian universities. It is based on the cooperation of academic researchers from Bavarian universities and other renowned centers of economic research in Bavaria. The program offers courses, workshops, and advice by the best scientists in the field. The Bavarian Graduate Program in Economics invites excellent doctoral students in Economics to participate in its courses and workshops.

Bavarian Research Training Group on Political Theory
The Bavarian Research Training Group on Political Theory is a cross-university cooperative partnership of the universities of Passau, Erlangen-Nuremberg, Eichstätt and Regensburg. It gives the doctoral candidates from these four universities an institutional framework for their doctoral research and study. As a forum, it offers its member early career researchers networking opportunities and the chance to test their practical skills by organising and holding conferences. The doctoral RTG is part of the Bayerisches Zentrum für politische Theorie (Bavarian Centre for Political Theory).
